Every year on June 5, the world observes the World Environment Day. This year’s event will be devoted to ‘Ecosystem Restoration’ which is also the start of a decade by the United Nations (UN) initiatives in ecosystem restoration for 2021-2030.
Humans inhabited the environment, and humans used the environment to suit their needs and desires in life. Whereas an ecosystem is an interaction or connection between living and non-living objects. Humans affecting the environment by altering ecosystems will cause disaster to humans themselves and the environment itself
Ecosystem throwback
Various changes to ecosystems in our country have had enormous effects, including resource deteriorations and water quality caused by the pollution of the river. The Great Flood of 2014, also known as ‘Bah Kuning,’ on Peninsular Malaysia’s east and north shores, particularly in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang, should serve as a lesson to all of us.
The torrential rain that poured during the northeastern monsoon resulted to disastrous floods and mud and log scrap which ruined physical ecosystems and caused a terrible effect, due to human greed exploring the forest. Not only did the victims suffer loss, damage to property, and even innocent lives. The victims of this disaster have suffered a total loss.
The tragedy of water and air pollution due to changes in the Kim Kim river ecosystem is caused by individuals who are greedy to take advantage of toxic waste dumped into the water environment because of their lack of understanding and feeling of responsibility.
Recreating the ecosystem
The 2021 Environment Day celebration has aligned this goal with the implementation of the “UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration,” which involves more than 70 countries and has the theme “ecosystem restoration” in the United Nations General Assembly. This calls for the restoration of ecosystems that are disrupted and damaged, to continue to preserve ecosystem conservation. The health of the ecosystems should be regenerated as of their richness and abundance of fertile soils and resources, timber, fish and greenhouse gas accumulation. This agenda is the role of Malaysians of all ages to realise the significance of re-creating the ecosystem. Efforts to rehabilitate the environment can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including the planting of trees and the avoidance of strain on the ecosystem. In this way, both directly and indirectly, the ecosystem can be rebuilt. This recovery has the potential to remove 13 to 26 giga tons of greenhouse emissions from the environment. Forests, agriculture, marshes, lake ecosystems, cities, and oceans are all examples of ecosystems that can be restored. This rehabilitation programme should involve everyone in Malaysia, from the government and enterprises to businessmen, communities, and individuals. We still require land and infrastructural facilities in the land area to meet societal needs, but we must adapt to climate change by maintaining ecosystem balance.
This intends to halt ecological degradation activities, reduce carbon emissions through Malaysia’s climate change policy, and ultimately meet Malaysia’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). It is everyone’s obligation to restore the ecology; make the “Sustainable Development Goals 2030” everyone’s agenda.
