How to make cities more sustainable?

More than two-thirds of the world’s population is expected to reside in cities by 2050, with the majority of this growth occurring in low- and lower-middle-income countries. However, densely populated urban areas have their own set of issues. As a result, there is an urgent need to begin ensuring that these urban places are inclusive, safe, sustainable, and resilient as soon as possible.

But what exactly does that imply? On World Cities Day 2018, UNU-EHS Senior Scientist Dr. Simone Sandholz identifies five promising characteristics of how cities with expanding populations might develop to become more sustainable.

  1. A better sustainable Urban Transport System;
  2. Nature-based Architectures in the Cities!
  3. Establish a network where the citizens within a community can support during an urban disaster.
  4. Smart solution by utilizing the technology to improve the urban livelihood.
  5. Joint collaboration between cities, countries and international bodies.
